How to Deep-Clean Your Office – Especially Those Communal Office Spaces

Let’s face it. Offices can be gross. We share refrigerators, water coolers, microwaves, and sinks. We all have differing levels of cleanliness standards. How, then, do we co-exist in an office environment with those sometimes less-than-clean communal office spaces?

In between general professional cleanings, a deep office clean is sometimes necessary. Or, maybe a round of the flu just went around your office and you’d like to deep-clean the office to help guard against the virus making another round. Here are a few tips to deep-clean your office in between professional cleanings.

Declutter your space

Start at one side of your office, and if you can engage others to do this too, it can be a great team building exercise. Organize any clutter – paperwork should be filed, pens placed neatly in their holder, and other personal items sorted and organized. Sort through paperwork to make sure you still need everything. If you don’t, recycle or shred as necessary. Edit your décor too, as this is a great time to minimize your surroundings and create a sense of calm in the office. For those shredding documents, Opportunity Village offers paper and document shredding services.

Dust and vacuum

Your commercial cleaning crew probably takes care of dusting and vacuuming on a regular basis, but sometimes there’s a need to do a clean sweep in between those professional cleaning services, especially if the office has just experienced a round of sickness or it’s allergy season. Make sure to to dust computer monitors, laptops, chairs, and all other office surfaces. Microfiber towels and other screen-friendly materials are ideal so you don’t scratch certain surfaces.

After you’ve dusted everything well, a quick vacuum job will help clean up the rest of the office dust and help keep things in tip top shape until your professional office cleaning crew comes back.

Clean and disinfect hard surfaces

Use a disinfectant cleaner or wipe, and clean each office area so that you’re covering the entire surface within that space. Make sure to pay special attention to high-touch areas such as door knobs, refrigerators, or microwaves. Don’t forget to clean little-cleaned areas such as the inside of your desk drawer or personal refrigerators in offices. Clean your computer’s keyboard by shutting down the equipment, then shaking the keyboard upside into a trash can to eliminate any crumbs or lint from the keys. Compressed air is a great tool to help get your keyboard as clean and dust-free as possible. Remember to also clean your computer’s mouse and desk phone with a disinfectant, and any other accessories you use on a regular basis.
